
Two on Day Two: Softball Tops Florida A&M, Ohio State

CLERMONT, Fla. -- On Day Two of the Dot Richardson National Collegiate Invitational, the University of North Florida softball team won both of its games to improve to 3-1 on the season. The Ospreys topped Florida A&M 12-8 to start the day and then came from behind to be Ohio State 10-5 to end it.
In Game One, UNF jumped out to an early 8-0 lead with four runs in both the second and third innings.
Florida A&M took advantage of a couple UNF miscues to start to come back against UNF. The Lady Rattlers scored three runs in the fourth and the sixth to make it a two-run game.
However, with two outs in the top of the seventh Mariah Reynolds blasted a grand slam that provided the Ospreys with a 12-6 advantage. In the bottom half of the inning, an Osprey miscue allowed Florida A&M got another two runs, but that was all as UNF held off Florida A&M.
Kaylie Wallace received the win after pitching the first 3.2 innings and allowing just three runs off five hits and recording six strikeouts.
Ashleigh Minter pitched two innings in the loss, allowing four runs off five hits with one strikeout.
In the afternoon, UNF used an eight-run fifth inning to come from behind and beat Ohio State.
The Buckeyes got on the scoreboard first with an RBI triple by Alicia Herron that scored Vanessa Spears to go up 1-0 in the top of the first.
UNF answered in the bottom of the first with Kaley Brosky scoring on a Mariah Reynolds double. The Ospreys went up 2-1 in the second when Alyson Bailey scored on an Ohio State miscue.
Ohio State used a three-run fourth inning to retake the lead. With runners in scoring position, a Shelby Pickett RBI single brought in Spears. Then later in the inning with bases loaded, the Buckeyes had back-to-back RBI singles that put them up 4-2. The Buckeyes then increased their lead the three in the fifth, using a Leesa Gresham RBI triple to bring in Spears and go ahead 5-2.
The Ospreys answered with a big fifth inning, getting eight runs off five hits. Back-to-back bases loaded walks provided UNF with its first two runs of the innings. Still with bases loaded, Chie Someya was hit by a pitch that advanced Danica Mandarano to home. A Jackie Reese RBI single with runners on first and third later in the inning allowed Bailey to score, giving the Ospreys a 6-5 advantage. After a Brosky walk loaded the bases, Marissa Thomas hit a two-RBI single to right field the drove in both Someya and Reese. In the next at-bat, Reynolds doubled to left center, bringing home both Brosky and Thomas and putting the Ospreys ahead 10-5.
Both Thomas and Reynolds were 3-for-4 from the plate with one run. Reynolds also had three RBI, while Thomas had two.
Kayla Goff came in relief and got the win after pitching the final 3.2 innings. She only allowed one run and two hits while striking out one.
Mikayla Endicott had the loss after giving up seven runs and 11 hits in 5.2 innings. She also had eight strikeouts.
UNF wraps up play at the Dot Richardson Collegiate Invitational on Sunday when the Ospreys face Bethune-Cookman at 2 p.m.
