TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida women's cross country team won their second meet in two tries at the Seminole Invitational on Friday evening, while the men's team took fourth place in the later race.
The women's team, previously victorious at the Covered Bridge Invite in Boone, N.C., placed all five of their scoring runners in the top 15 of the 162-person race to take first-place honors.
Senior Erin Nixon (17:54.62) placed fourth to lead the way for the Ospreys in the 5-kilometer race, edging out junior Meggie Emons (18:00.83), who finished seventh. Junior Shelby Kittrell (18:12.48) placed 10th to give UNF three runners in the top ten, while freshman Elle Baker (18:29.62) and junior Ecateri Gheorghiu (18:36.85) fininshed 14th and 15th, respectively.
Senior Brooke Baumann (19:06.31) and freshman Alyssa Brandt (19:14.34) also placed for the Ospreys, finishing 21st and 25th.
The women scored 40 points on the meet, 10 points ahead of runner-up Florida State and 21 points ahead of third-place Auburn. Jackie Drouin, a Florida State runner that ran unattached, took first place with a time of 17:30.23.
In the men's 8-kilometer race, senior Mike Strasser (25:48.61) was the fastest Osprey, grabbing seventh place. Sophomore Chris Haynes (26.09.92) was next in 14th place, just ahead of junior James Post (26:29.45) in 18th. Senior Josh Brown (27:16.25) and junior Gilbert Vasquez (27:27.32) rounded out the scoring for UNF in 38th and 41st, respectively.
The Ospreys grabbed 103 points on the day to earn fourth place, 27 points behind Alabama-Huntsville but 58 points in front of fifth-place Florida Tech.
Senior Cameron Dickerson (27:36.43) finished 47th, while sophomore Sean White (27:48.20) was in 56th.
Auburn took first-place honors in the men's race with 38 points, 18 ahead of runner-up Florida State. Kane Grimster, an Auburn freshman took the individual title with a time of 25:30.11.
