NEW ORLEANS, La. -- The University of North Florida men's and women's cross country teams both maintained top-10 positions in the South Region, according to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Week 1 Poll, released Monday morning.
The women used their victory at the Covered Bridge Invite to leap three positions from their 10th-place spot in the preseason poll, climbing into sixth place behind top-ranked Florida State and four SEC schools. The Ospreys' jump was tied for the largest climb in the poll, joining fellow Atlantic Sun Conference member Lipscomb, who moved from 10th to seventh, and South Florida of the Big East Conference, the new eighth-place team after being picked 11th before the season.
UNF is the highest-ranked A-Sun team in the poll, edging out Lipscomb and placing ahead of cross-town rival Jacksonville, who debuted at 12th on the 15-team list.
The men's team, coming off a fifth-place finish at the Covered Bridge Invite maintained their 10th-place position in the regional poll. UNF is one of four A-Sun teams that make an appearance in this week's edition, joining Belmont (sixth place), Lipscomb (13th) and East Tennesee State (not ranked last week). Only the SEC has more teams (seven) in the top 15.
Both cross country teams are next in action at the Seminole Invitational in Tallahassee, Fla. on Friday, Sept. 23. The women's race will start at 6 p.m.
