FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. -- No. 6/10 ranked North Florida golf team swept the team and individual honors Tuesday at the Amelia National Intercollegiate. The Ospreys captured the team championship by 10 shots while Sean Dale, Kevin Phelan and Kevin Aylwin claimed the top three individual spots in the field.
The Ospreys, who carded a final round 286 (-2), led the event wire-to-wire finishing with a program record total of 843 (-21). It was the team's second tournament title this season as UNF has finished in the top three teams at every event this fall.
Dale captured his second career collegiate medalist honor after shooting a nine-under-par 207 including a team-best 70 (-2) in the final round. The junior from Jacksonville has now carded under-par scores in eight of 12 competitive rounds this season.
Phelan, another junior for UNF, shot even-par 72 Tuesday to finish in second-place at 210 (-6). It marked the third runner-up finish of his career. Senior Kevin Aylwin was tied for third at 211 (-5) following a final round 72.
A pair of freshmen rounded out the Osprey lineup at the event with MJ Maguire finishing tied for 10th at 217 (+1) and Joey Petronio tied for 18th at 200 (+4). Additionally, Brant DeLongy (T-47th/230) and Joey Marino (T-65th/235) competed as individuals in the event for UNF.
“This was a great way to finish the fall season,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “The guys played well and with confidence all fall and our goals our high for the remainder of the year. We learned that we can play alongside the best teams in the country and be competitive. I was proud of how well all the guys played this week. Definitely the first time I know of that we had the top three finishers at an event. We did a good job of playing solid golf and keeping Texas A&M from making a run in the final round. The guys have earned some time off as we get rested and reloaded for the spring.”
No. 31-ranked Texas A&M finished second at 853 (-11) with tournament co-host Georgia Southern finishing third at 866. VCU was fourth at 876 followed by Xavier (887), Troy (888), USC Upstate (902), Jacksonville (903), Furman (905), Arkansas State (908), Wofford (908), Winthrop (913), Francis Marion (915), Penn State (919) and Elon (931).
North Florida is now off from competition for nearly three months before returning to tournament action at the JU Invitational on Jan. 30-31, 2012.
